OT/Doug. The 30 yrs War from 1618-1648 in Europe looks applicable

It was a prolonged, though intermittent, very bloody & barbaric religious war, fought between Catholic and Protestant armies, mostly on German soil.

By the time the massive destruction and loss of life was over, Germany's population had been reduced by 30%. and it's economy destroyed for decades.

At least at the onset of our present conflict, there are more than a few parallels.

1. Like the current period, the 17th Century was characterized by great scientific and technological innovation: Kepler, Tycho Brae, Galileo in astronomy, Harvey in physics, Rene' Descartes in Philosophy. The list goes on and on

2. Like todays Terror War the loss of life and property damage among civilians was unusually high. Remember, we've only recently experienced the kind of carnage and property destruction that Israel has fought against for many years.

3. The sincere faith of many devout but naive followers was exploited by callous power politicians both in the church and governing secular regimes. The enemy was demonized as an agent of the devil and the resulting acts of barbarism were horrifying both in their magnitude and their frequency.

4. France, the greatest power of the time, was the diplomatic maestro behind the western alliance but almost all the fighting took place on the soil of the relatively backward, politically fragmented and undeveloped territiories of Germany and Bohemia.

And worst of all? Considering the stagger loss of life and treasure little was really gained, although France continued to be the dominant power in Europe while Germany was devastated.

Hopefully, the conflict now developing between the west, led by the US, and the fanatical extreme Islamic fundamentalist alliances will end sooner and a less cost to mankind.
