I doubt that anyone can protect themselves absolutely from this type of event. 1% of any population is criminally insane and poverty makes this higher due to a variety of reasons

This is my point. It's about risk management. Some problems you deal with by mitigating them by solving underlying problems and making people happy or whatever to deal with the root cause and then tolerate whatever remains unmitigated. Other problems won't tolerate a one percent failure rate. Like yesterday's. Terrorist groups require counter-terrorism treatment by authorities to put them out of commission. IMO.

Seems like we should at least work on our image and table manners, if nothing else, to fix the problem.

Well, I definitely agree with that.

Does anyone remember when we gave missiles to Afghanistan because of their war with the Soviets? It would seem not...

Russia is a democracy now ...it was worth it . But there
are always going to be repercussions.

As long as the world gets poorer while we get richer, it will be easy to demonize us and we should expect more of this type of activity.

as soon as we can encourage and bring about democracy
in those parts of the world run by zealous, tyranical
religious fundamentalist leaders ....their conditions
will improve .

We are at war ---->with fundamentalist Islam.

And Jefferson's ideals will triumph in the end ...and
well they should ....it is the more "divine" way
to govern...

Our high profile and extravagant lifestyle makes us the envy of the world.

You pompous little ass. I've got news for you, that style of political correctness is out the window.

If that wasn't enough reason to be hated, we are frequently self-absorbed, sanctimonious, arrogant, prescriptive and have a variety of other proclivities that must be incredibly annoying if you aren't from here.

The greatest culture in the history of man kind has every right to be self absorbed. I find it border line insane to recall how upset this thread was when the Taliban decided on their own sovereign soil to knock down a Buddha statue. There was more outcry for that silly religious superstition than there is for the WTC.
