No, I do not. I know that their are many Muslims who cherish the freedoms we do, including most of the 7 Million Muslims in the US. But when I say that we are hated in other parts of the world, that is clearly valid.

As for the spent shells, that ain't the reason and if you don't know it, then you are a choosing to be blind to reality. So-Called Fundementalist Muslims don't want freedom of choice, they don't want freedom of the press, they don't believe in sexual equality, they don't believe that all men are created equal.

My point is that the world has many more people influenced by Fundemtalists than by those forward thinking IMAMS who are running thinks within the Muslim Brotherhood, and their cohorts.

As much as these rhetorical questions about belief systems are interesting and useful, the main point is that just as there are wide spectrums of opinions here, each religion typically has a wide spectrum of beliefs as well.

First and foremost, I believe that not everything is relative, there are certain principles that clearly are absolute. If CNN's story is to be believed, the brave passengers in flight 93 who fought back certainly did not wring their hands and worry about root causes of injustice or religious discrimination in the middle east, or whether stopping the terrorists would only breed more resentment about americans by more radical muslims. If the story is true, they made the right choice and fought back.

Having said that, the reasons why these people can be so effective is primarily their belief system --- they believe that they will go to heaven by their heavenly acts. History is full of people who are willing to commit suicide for their belief systems.

In World War II, the japanese suicide pilots took out quite a few ships, but there was a way to stop them, there are three possible solutions here.

1. A clearly inhuman and barbaric solution. Make the penalty so severe that it will act as a deterrent. In the case of japan, the horrific destruction of two cities were enough to bring even the most fanatic elements of japanese society (I would argue even more fanatic than them) people to their knees. This is unlikely in this day and age as the loss of innocent lifes would be unacceptable and we would not be able to live with ourselves in the aftermath.

2. A somewhat barbaric and inhumane solution as well. In ancient societies, crimes beyond a certain stage (eg:treason against the state), and I would argue that mass murder of thousands of people would qualify, requires capital punishment for not just the perpetrator, but their parents, grandparents, siblings, first uncles and aunts, children, nephews and nieces, grandchildren (for unix types, think of a genetic rm -rf ../..), basically removing their entire genetic makeup from the gene pool. In those societies, it had certainly been a very good deterrent. The flip side is of course that these relatives are likely to be innocent. This is not a workable solution either, but certainly will deter them. But we will also not be able to live with ourselves if we do this.

3. I think this is the real workable solution. These people believe that they will enter heaven by taking away the lifes of the perceived enemies of islam. Someone instilled this belief system in them. Assuming that this is not god's true intention, they must be wrong, so the belief system of killing us as their path to heaven is also wrong. Since it is wrong, there must be a way to destroy this belief system (as it did with japan). Targeting the most radical elements and pillars of this belief system --- their mullahs and great teachers who teach killing of non-muslims figure prominently in this solution, a proactive long term action by all world governments to help the moderate mullahs who truly preach tolerance while 'silencing' (peacefully, if possible) the radical mullahs who advocate mass murder will probably help. Have the entire world outlaw hate crimes advocating murder --- and it should not be hard to keep these great teachers out of circulation. This will take years to complete, and they will fight back, but in the end, after decades of a sustained campaign, their belief system will collapse. When people realize that they are not going to heaven, they are unlikely to continue to do the same stupid thing.

Just my opinion.
