" Bombing never caused anyone to give up, and it certainly didn't work with Nazi Germany, Japan, or Vietnam or Iraq, for that matter. Bombing, other than for the purpose of assisting ground troops, is a waste of time. All it does is piss people off. Ground troops, on the other hand, bring governments down. And there is no place for anyone to hide. And I think you're ignoring a lot of history here. The reason that Germany and Japan converted to democracy and capitalism was because of their defeat. The defeat proved the illegitimacy of their political orientation. The same thing happened with Communism. Immediately after the first peeling back of Communist expansion, the whole thing collapsed in a pile of self contradictions. The ideology that we have to fight is not a religious one, it is a political one. That political ideology is radical fundamental Islam. As soon as the first few radical fundamental Islamic governments fall, the stupid idea will be dispatched to the dustbin of history, and we won't be hearing from them again. It is the worldly defeat of these stupid political ideas that proves their lack of worth. If God truly is protecting the government of Afghanistan, why would He let them be conquered by infidels? That is the contradiction that must be proved, and it cannot be proved by air forces. Instead, it requires ground troops. I'm supposing you're located in Australia. You have no idea how angry this nation is. By the way, if the Pakistanis made the slightest realistic threat to use nukes against anyone we would swamp them with conventional forces. The U.S. faced the Soviet Union with 10,000 long range, highly effective nuclear warheads for 30 years, we are not afraid of a few inefficient devices built by a backward country that has never constructed an aircraft. They know that, and so do we. At the moment, the U.S. is the only real support that Pakistan has against India, which hates them and is considerably larger, richer and more advanced than them. I would say that it is unlikely that Pakistan will get in our way. -- Carl
