John, RE: The institutions shouldn't be fragile. They should be able to continue despite the horror, the deaths of 1000's of people, the destruction of a half dozen buildings. We shouldn't allow a group of thugs to shut down our institutions.

What would happen if there was a "real" war, with far more destruction? If a relatively small group of determined
terrorists can shut down the country, are we not vulnerable to an enemy with much more resources?

I guess you're making the same point as me, just from a different perspective. Yes, we are vulnerable to an enemy with much more resources.

And for that reason, we cannot look at our institutions as being pillars of strength without realizing that people with human frailties are holding those institutions aloft. Concerted effort must be expended to insure the freedoms and way of life that we cherish.

John,

I agree with you on the institutions

Having said that, everybody i know feels like they were kicked in the stomach by the terrorists.

Even thousands of miles away it feels terrible.

And getting back to work or watching a ball game etc just doesnt seem right.

regards,

Kash

JF, <What would happen if there was a "real" war, with far more destruction? If a relatively small group of determined terrorists can shut down the country, are we not vulnerable to an enemy with much more resources?>

If that were the occur, most people would realize that the time for mourning would not be right now.

But in these particular circumstances, we have this opportunity to mourn, and we're taking it. If anything, the sooner we can mourn, the sooner we can get back to our lives, however changed they will be. But as a nation, we need to take this time.
