As your anger and confusion over this event dwindles down so that clearer heads prevail, consider what these terroists wanted to do to us beyond just fly into buildings. What did they target and why did they target it? 1. World Trade Center - High building in the center of the worlds financial district of the biggest stock market in the world. They targetted it at a time when the world's economy was at an all time low and having alot of problems. This target was not just to inflict harm on us one time by showing us a sign of terror, but to inflict long term damage to us in a few ways. First, to kill alot of people in the building. Second to kill alot of people around the building. They staged the second flight to hold off hitting the second building until they had news coverage, until they had sucked alot of people out into the street, and until they had brought alot of emergency people into the area. But what else are they trying to accomplish with this one site? Long term, we face alot of disease from this event if we do not clean it up quickly and get it under control. This affects our water systems, our air, and the rest of the population in NYC. The emergency crews there deserve ALOT of credit for pushing so hard to get this started and cleaned up. Second, they attacked the financial center of the US. This has an even more devastating effect on us long term in that it will force MANY of the worlds makrets to crash in a panic from uncertaintity if we allow it to happen. This part is fueled by us and a combination of greed, fear, bad market execution, etc. It would be unfortunate if we allowed ourselves to push the market to acheive what these terrorists wanted us to do and take down the world economy in such a way that MANY people worldwide suffer from this event. This is one area where we, even us on SI here can build a firm resolve to not allow the market to crash and not allow these terrorists to destory the world economy with these acts. 2. White House/Pentagon - they targeted this to destroy our government. If they had suceeded, this would have aided in destorying the economy as we would be in a major confusion about how to proceed and how to calm the world during these times. It would most certainly have resulted in others being named President, and it may have resulted in a sucession of persons being president. This confusion would have caused us a long time wihtout strong clear leadership. We are fortunate that our government came thru this without any real direct losses to the chain of command. We should also be thankful to the heros on the second flight that took action to keep that from hitting any other targets in DC. The point of this is that the attack was not just a one time single event, it was designed to cause us long term problems. It is up to us to not allow these long term problems to persist and conquer us. Do not sell your holdings on Monday and take the cash to the bank. Do not allow panic to prevail. Do not go take this as a time of greed. Take this as a time of calm. Allow the system to work for us and allow the economy to stablize before jumping into positions where you may regret taking it for a long time. I hope that we figure out how to take measures against these terrorists and to end this entire thing worldwide by passing alot stronger international laws on how to deal with them. Make harboring them a crime in of itself. Make it like a drug dealer that we can take all their assets immediately worldwide on any attack. Make it so that we can do this on the intent, not conviction, as they do in drug cases now. Make it immediate for anyone who is requested to extradite a terrorist, has to comply or face being relagated to the ranks of terrorist themselves. This goes for Palestine, Afganistan, Libya, Egypt, or any other country where we have information that these people have been hiding out and we asked for cooperation and do not get it. This should be done through the UN and NATO and made a world wide standard. If any of the leads in this case lead to Afganistan, then a simple request to extradite them would be enough to initiate the process. Remember in Libya, we had direct evnidence of the terrorists in the Lockerbie event and we could NEVER get Libya to extradite them for almost 5 years. Make this the worldwide standard and those that do not sign up to this are then considered part of the worldwide problem. Make world trade to these that do not sign up to stronger measuers worldwide not allowed under Nato rules and drop them from the WTO, world bank, and any other organization which is supported by the free world. As I sit here with my sons around me and wonder if they will go off to war, I think through how many years will we take to quell this awful event before we can return to world peace?
