TLC,

Thanks for your thoughts, so well expressed.

My anger, sadness, rage, grief, and a thousand other emotions are growing daily. As the numbness subsides, my mind runs to overflowing with thoughts of how this scourge can be dealt with. They are not nice thoughts, or even moderately bad thoughts. And I consider myself a peaceful person.

Any organism required to fight off disease must ultimately deal with the support structures of that disease. When foot and mouth disease spread in Europe this year, the response, however gruesome, was to kill its unfortunate hosts. When the AIDS scourge descended upon our society twenty years ago, we fought the symptoms for awhile without much success. Now, in the first attack that has met at least limited success, the virus is fought by relentlessly attacking its support structures on several fronts, by denying it the opportunity to latch onto or receive what nourishes it, and to fight it on all fronts simultaneously.

So too must we fight terrorism. Mr. bin Laden reportedly inherited hundreds of millions of dollars, and probably has at least 200 million dollars. Where? In cash in a cave filled with scorpions? I doubt that. It must be in financial institutions somewhere. I suspect we already have evidence about where some of it is.

So for starters, try this: Notify a financial institution holding bin Laden assets that they have 24 hours to turn those assets over to us. One minute after the 24 hours, should they choose not to comply, they should evacuate their building and a perimeter around the building. At 24 hours and one minute, wipe the bank off the face of the Earth.

One hour later, announce the next bank. Follow the same procedure. Make no exceptions. If they think our banks, our World Trade Centers, our Wall Street, are important to our well being, how important are the few banks which exist to these countries?

Next, for countries which do not support the counterattack as requested, whether they be France or Pakistan. Land in their airports anyway. If they resist, shoot them down. Announce that the airports are now territories of the World Antiterrorism Protectorate until further notice. Use them to bomb whoever needs to be bombed. All national sovereignty rights give way to this imperative.

Third, suspend civil liberties laws in the U.S. (Not hate crime laws, just civil liberties laws) when necessary to protect public safety during times of crisis. If an airline wants to prohibit an Arab or an Arab American from getting on a plane, it may do so, until further notice. If an airline wants to conduct strip searches, if it wants to lay out the contents of the luggage of these people, it may do so, without regard to profiling or anything else. I hate this part as much or more than the next person, but it may be necessary.

Fourth, anyone in the U.S., citizen or not, convicted of supporting the terrorists in any way is not deported. They are imprisoned. Indefinitely.

Fifth, every single country and entity on the U.S. antiterrorism lists (which I posted links to yesterday) is encompassed in the declaration of war by the World Antiterrorism Protectorate. The war is not against bin Laden, it is not against Islamic Jihad, it is against anyone who has used or would use or will use this tactic against humanity. That includes everyone....the IRA, the Serbians, the FALN, everyone.

more to follow...I have a ceremony to attend for the moment of silence, which we are holding under a flagpole under a blue, nearly planeless sky.

Great post, my friend

And I am happy to hear that your brother is fine.

I think that all of us will be getting the calls in the next few days from friends and family who are directly affected by this. By the loss of a loved one.

I have to make a call to one of our mutual friends who hasn't been around these parts in a while. I just heard that he had a good friend who was on one of the planes.

We will all be touched by this....
