I'd agree with you if there was an enemy that could be identified and eradicated. Unfortunately, in the shadowy world of fundamentalist zealotry, there is a support network extending into the general populations that has provided financial support to the extremists, and concurrently, as the CIA has reluctantly admitted, the cells that these extremists operate in are not infiltrated by the usual means of bribery, etc. that work with most venal subversive organizations. With their strict fanatical/religious basis and no seeming interest in money as a prime motivator, our counter-intelligence people have been having a very difficult time planting moles and gaining access to the planning intelligence we need to interdict these acts of terrorism. Re: if I may: "outfoxed" implies the terrorists did something we hadn't thought of. They didn't. Frankly, I non-concur. Unless you are revealing classified information here, it has never been suggested in the press or in any other threat analysis I've read that we would face the situation we did last Tuesday. Four jets simultaneously hijacked, with rumors of more, the use of jets as cruise missiles. No, I've never heard of this contemplated before. Though it is clear that the WTC has been a favored target for as long as it has existed. But we were all thinking and concentrating on the suitcase nuke, or the biological spew from a Cessna above Manhattan or some chemical agent surruptitously introduced into the water supply. I believe that we had become fairly complacent about jet hijackings, not because they weren't possible, but because we'd done so much to make sure there were no problems on international flights, and we simply didn't anticipate the huge vulnerability in the domestic fleet. Second, the last thing people like Bin Laden want is the friendship and support from a western government. Agreed, Bin Laden should have only one fate from here on out. I believe the term is terminate with extreme prejudice. I'll be very disappointed if he should be brought to trial. Better for him to be handed over to us on his shield, so to speak. Same for all the rest who've joined his poisoned fraternity. My case for Western respect and friendship for the Mid East, no matter how insincere, is to try to steer future generations away from the Bin Laden hatred. To make them at least tolerate us. -Ray
