My case for Western respect and friendship for the Mid East, no matter how insincere, is to try to steer future generations away from the Bin Laden hatred. To make them at least tolerate us.

We can and must do all we can to be friends and allies with the masses in the Middle East; I was just pointing out that the terrorist cell fanatics are largely immune to reasonable persuasion. And damn hard to infiltrate as the experts have noted. We will most likely catch them through communications intercepts, swift action and some luck.

As for what is expected, believe me that someone somewhere on a government payroll has thought through and role-played just about every scenario physically possible concerning terrorism. But there is only so much you can do. For example, the airspace over the Mall in Washington is restricted and the White House has its own anti-aircraft systems - so it didn't get hit.

But the Pentagon sits under the flight path for two airports. You can't shut down the airspace or blow up any jet that happens to stray off course.

I agree we had become much too complacent about hijackings. Coming back to the US from overseas more and more often, I noticed how soft our airports and airplanes were compared to the average European airport. Now we have to get used to a new regimen.

Jet as Cruise missile - features heavily in Tom Clancy's "Debt of Honor" -

So it is almost certainly in the standard scenarios, since this where much of Clancy's stuff comes from.

>>>Four jets simultaneously hijacked, with rumors of more, the use of jets as cruise missiles. No,
I've never heard of this contemplated before. <<<

Four at one time may not have been contemplated. One or Two almost certainly was, and around early 90's.

This was part of the argument for more human intelligence capability - which did into get close to being funded at the desired level. All this in open meetings and publications, some of which ended up in Clancy's books.

re: "Four jets simultaneously hijacked, with rumors of more, the use of jets as cruise missiles. No, I've never heard of this contemplated before."

Have had this discussion with others over 10 years ago. It's not particularly difficult to think up or even execute, but my friends and I had concluded it would have probably involved the use of guns with airport insider help.

Am curious as to what the plane from Newark was heading for before it turned around at Cleveland. Suspect the Sears Tower was the initial target. They were after icons.

My guess is that Washington DC will be the focus of the next round of attacks. Take out the government or, more likely, the CIA. Our initial response to what happened this week had better be crippling to all of the major terrorist organizations who have designs against this country,

You don't even want to know of some of the other possible actions we discussed that terrorists might take. Let's just say that living in close proximity to a lot of other people isn't the best idea in the world right now.
