I have to say I agree with this statement for the most part. It is the reason we have gotten as far as we have. However, our reasonableness and inclusiveness allows for views like this:washingtonpost.com It turns out that, according to some leading American theologists, the murderers that flew planes into office buildings because God wanted them to, weren't so far off. God in fact DID want them to do that, in order to punish the U.S. for the actions of the American Civil Liberties Union. Those darn liberals again. The clerics quoted in that Post article, who are respected white male American citizens (respected by some anyway), are also sure they know what God wants, just like Bin Laden's killers. They would be more than happy to turn the U.S. into a theocracy where women are under the same general kind of oppression as they are under the Taliban. The point is, Cheryl, the problems involved ARE complex. Evil has many ever-changing faces, some outside, some inside. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, but that vigilance can't just be directed outward. You can't talk about how inclusive a people the Americans are, and in the same breath refer to large, undifferentiated national groups with the odious term "ragheads". I hope you won't answer that you were just referring to the BAD ragheads. There's no question that the maniacs who committed this atrocity, and the network which supports them, have to be taken out with extreme prejudice. But there is also no question that the long-range solution to these problems involves more than just killing some bad guys and getting back to business. Ghandi: "An eye for an eye and pretty soon everyone is blind." Unless you want to take the side of our home-grown maniacs quoted in that Post article, you have to admit that we must come to grips with some difficult problems, and not dismiss anything that doesn't say "we're all good and they're all bad" as horsesh*t. If we do that, this will keep happening. This crime took place because the world has changed in ways that are difficult to understand, we don't understand them yet. If we don't recognize that now, we will recognize it later. Better to exercise our American reasonableness and recognize it now. --QS
