Haven't you heard there's a war on?

<<I truly hope not, but I think this all could turn out very badly. >>

Don't you think the designers of and participants in any such military action might give this possibility a bit of consideration?

Apologies for singling you out, as you're by no means the worst example of a tendency that can be observed everywhere on the 'net (in "normal" times as well as recently), and certainly any of us can be forgiven for "venting" amidst such horror and uncertainty, but, all the same, I believe that we should all think twice before uttering such defeatist claptrap, or by spreading rumors or conjectures (often implicitly racist) whose only effect is to spread panic, fear, disunity, and distraction.

Don't want to sound negative, but I don't think much is going to come of this compared to what the average U.S. citizen wants done about this tragedy. Our gov't just does not have the clout, that's why we are spending so much time asking for support from around the world. Out gov't is just too scared to act independently and protect our interest and the hell with the world. I say close our borders, let the CIA take care of Bin Laden, put the U.S. Marshall office in charge of airport security and airplane passengers, have only a separate outside entrance/exit to the pilot compartment and take a stand for USA by changing our immigration policy to a limited amount of people that meets medical and intelligent standards.

Re Attacking through Pakistan:
Get a map or globe and your question will be answered. There are only 3 general routes for sending a major force into Afghanistan and only 2 that are practical for a sea-based force. The land route must either pass over Russia or Iran plus one or more southern breakaway Russian republics and would require use of Turkish bases. The more practical routes for a sea-based force must pass over or through Iran or Pakistan. There is no alternative; Afghanistan has no coastline. Entering Iran, Russia or Pakistan with a military force without their approval would have grave consequences, even for the world's most powerful military force.
