Bravo, JQP, well said about travel defeating ignorance. So many people on SI are struggling to grasp cultures and ideas that are so foreign that they literally can't put them into any context that makes sense to them - so they resort to bigotry, slogans, absolute declarations, etc. The siege of Sarajevo seemed far away in 1993, but now many New Yorkers have a sense of what can happen in the world when hate takes over.

Fortunately, very few if any people in the foreign policy decisionmaking process labor under that handicap, based on what I saw during my career there. The biggest challenge in any big US action is just trying to get all the pieces and parts of the bureaucracy to function and make it happen.
