So far I think our leaders are doing a fine job. This will have to be a global, multinational effort to seek out and destroy the enemy. I don't think we will have the same problem in Afganistan as the soviets. We will not have as much of the political consequence and if a multinational force can be employed to keep the battlefield geography under control. I think we will be able to avert significant casualty by the use of overwhelming force.

So from an initial perspective of just afganistan, perhaps iraq, I think we should have little difficulty. However, from a long term perspective, the financial war and the global effort to identify pockets of terrorists and their activity I feel as though will be the bulk of the war effort.

However, my largest fear is the resolve of middle eastern governments and their willingness to stand behind a protracted war or occupation inside their borders and perhaps even their alliance with us.

Yes. A lot. Look what happened with the Soviets in ten years of war in Afghanistan.
Yes, the Soviets lost their whole way of life. I repeat I am not talking about money and bodies. I am talking about how changed America will be at the conclusion of this war than it is at the beginning. Anyone who thinks they have future events mapped out and that America alone will decide the time and place this action concludes, or the steps taken in this action is living in a fool's paradise.
