It would seem that the "moderates" hold a large key as to the duration and influence of these fanatics. as you pointed out, the Saudi's have been allowed to walk the fence. The article was useful, but I think it missed an important point, a point that reaches the essence of what bin Laden wants. What he wants most is an outright war between the US and Islam. He wants a war that will make the position of Arab moderates untenable, a war that will force every Arab to surrender or join the extremists. He wants to provoke a battle that will make him and those like him the leaders of the Arab world. He wants total polarization. He wants us to strike back blindly, with weapons that will not touch him and his core people - they will be very well hidden at this point - but which will devastate as many innocents as possible, driving thousands of new recruits to his ranks. What amazes me is that so many Americans - and so many posters on SI - seem so eager to give him exactly what he wants.
