I think the serious question is whether or not the Taliban and other terrorist states will try to gain the alliance of other geographically large middle eastern countries. If this happens, Europe will have to become involved.

The fact that they have used much of europe as a staging area as well as the impact terrorism has abroad suggests that they will jump on board.

Further out, one has to ask about the goals of this kind of an operation. If this escalates, and by hook or by crook the western nations and china are the presumed victors. Then we have the same the question as to whom belongs the spoils. This to me makes me wonder why this would not escalate.

I think we will see some very soft treading before any significant action is taken from a military point of view.

Ideally, I would like to see a multinational support to simply ferret out the extremists in a divide and conquer type fashion. This has the natural weakness of geographic division.

Once the small bites have been taken, then it would be time to attack the governments that are not aligned with us.
