nadine, i'm going to take exception here. suicide bombers are nits and evil. they are wrong no matter what their motivation. however, israel doesn't play games, either. an israeli solder is killed and 40 rock throwing plestinians are gunned down by israeli troops. sure, bullets are more "civilized" than car bombs. rock throwing palestinians are a bit more deserving of a death sentence than jews in a cafe. but death is still death...

True, the Israelis are not playing games. But those rock-throwers are backed by machine guns, for the deliberate purpose of incurring casualties. Did you hear about the after-school special the PA ran on its state-controlled tv, where Mohammend al Durra invited other young boys to join him in Paradise as a martyr? Paradise had green fields, and kites flying. It looked very nice.

In this "intifada", shooting incidents (including the use of grenades and mortars) have averaged fifty per day. We are not talking rock-throwing kids here. This is a military campaign.

are you saying more israelis have died at the hands of palestinians than palestinians have died at the hands of israelis? my guess is that you have to go a looooooooooooooooong way back before you can find a year where the palestinians killed more israelis than visa versa. a loooooooooooong time.

I don't have to look far back. I just have to look at the period from disco bombing in May until now. Israel tried restraint in June and July, but the other side did not reciprocate. Every day Israelis died from bombs and drive-by shootings on the roads.

i see a big circle where both parties have legitimate issues but both parties are also very inflexible

Very inflexible? Do you know what Israel offered at Camp David and Taba? and to a terrorist state, that had proved it had not changed its stripes?

I invite you read the long featured interview in Haaretz (www.haaretzdaily.com) with Shlomo Ben-Ami, how hard he tried to come to an agreement with Palestinians, and see what you make of it.

The Israelis made proposals, and the Americans made proposals, and at the end they offered over 95% of the territories. The Palestinians never made a proposal. On this, all sides agree. They just sat and said no to everything. At the end, they just said, we insist on full right of return for refugees, i.e. open your doors to 5 million refugees at once, which would turn Israel into an Arab state. They wouldn't negotiate. Arafat refused to negotiate. Ben-Ami says, he thinks he's a myth, he thinks he's Saladin, so he cannot ever stand up and say, the conflict is over.

I agree the Palestinians have legitimate beefs. But they do not have, and never had, a legitimate government to talk to.
