>>there is a deeply held belief in the US of a mystical duty to hold the line against the nations of Islam

I don't think so.

It certainly was not true in Afghanistan, where we supported Islam's fight against the secular regime installed there by the Soviets, which in retrospect was much better for the Afghans, especially the women, than what is there now.

And it certainly was not true in the Balkans where we have been on the same side as Osama Bin Laden and Iran in Bosnia, and Kosovo.

Finally, although we are not supporting the Chechens in their fight with Russia for obvious reasons, there is considerable moral support both in the administration and the press for their "freedom fight." Osama Bin Laden is very active there too. That's why Putin was so effusive with his empathy after WTC. He thinks that now we will see the light.

>>Personal freedom, personal accountability, free will, respect for the freedom of others, tolerance, duty.<< ... as the legacy of French revolution (and its US implementation) and of German philosophy of 19th century.

Note that for human history terror (or better terreur) officially started with Robespierre and that his (and Danton's etc) period was an obscene travesty of "liberte, fraternite, egalite" principles of the original public uprising. Very much as obscene as the Marx quote "The work will set you free" on main entrances to concentration camps.

But I guess Im digressing...

I don't know if this is something that Europeans and other Westerners have in common with us, but there is a deeply held belief in the US of a mystical duty to hold the line against the nations of Islam

Really? Where did you get that? Ah, can't argue with mysticism, can I?

That's an unsupportable statement that has me scratching my head in wonder.

and there is very little distinction drawn by Christians against Judaeism as a religion and Christianity

Well, I wouldn't agree with that one. Rather they don't make much distinction between Jews and Muslims. Both got slaughtered in the Crusade for example. And then we have that term "Anti-Semitism" which neatly covers both Jews and Arabs.
