so it is ridiculous to chide us for being arrogant.

I'm not suggesting that we're being arrogant now in dealing the the existing regimes. But I see people heading that way. For example, it's asking for trouble on this thread to wonder aloud how we would feel if some country came to us and demanded we extradite someone we don't know is guilty and send him to be tried in that country, where we are not confident that justice can be obtained. Or, another example, how would we feel if some country expected our leadership to disavow some of our extremists? You know the fuss that is made when Presidential candidates are expected to forego the obligatory visit to Bob Jones University. What if some foreign country insisted on it.

I'm not suggesting that we not pressure Middle East countries to disavow their nuts, only that we do so with an sensitivity to how it would feel if the shoe were on the other foot.

What is being called self-determination in this case is the ability of despots to repress and endlessly propagandize the majority of the population.

It's none of our business. It wasn't a week ago and it isn't now.
