Six training camps and rebel bases used by bin Laden's supporters in Afghanistan are understood to have been identified as targets. "We are going to go in hard and we are going to get it right," one Pentagon official told The Telegraph.>> This must be disinformation. Surely no one is stupid enough to believe that the situation in Afghanistan is static. What kind of intellect would choose to stand and defend a piece of ground against the tremendous killing power of the U.S. military. If those camps are still peopled, you can be sure they are a defensible trap but I can't see how that is possible. That is yesterday's target, today's target is moving or more likely has already moved into the shadows. Guerrilla wars are not fought for ground, they are fought for the sole purpose of inflicting damage; causing death and destruction to a more powerful and less committed enemy. Wars against guerrillas ARE NOT WON, unless and until the population no longer supports the guerrillas. In the interim, the only question for the more powerful force is whether the losses are acceptable and what means can be used to reduce casualties. I think we can all agree that these two choices bring no joy. If we fight a war against terrorism, we must be the guerrilla force. We must choose the time and place of engagement. We must keep them constantly vigilant, always alert, always afraid, guessing whether and when we are coming. We must strike quickly and quietly. They must die in the dark without glory. We should not give them military targets as we look for camps that are no longer there or, if there, no longer contain anything of importance other than a few martyrs in waiting who are prepared to die valiantly. If we are going to do it right, then let's take away the old minds with their old ways and big weapons. Let's give this job to those who can run with the elusive new dogs of war. Spotters on the ground to call in missels or bombs, assassination squads or solo snipers with lift offs a few minutes away. The world knows you don't stand in the path of the elephant, the world should soon learn that we have snakes that can strike as well. The other side of Ed.
