michael, the US is very far from that. Just compare population densities in the US and Europe.

That's not even necessary; a national call to action for energy independence would bring forth an overwhelming array technical and operational solutions to reduce overall energy, and continue and accelerate growth. We have unlimited capability and creativity as a nation, once we're motivated. No one had could predict how to get to the moon or control fission until a coordinated effort was focused on it.

We have a leadership vacuum on this issue, as well. Just "business as usual, drill faster" is stupid, but understandable to the mossbacks. Short-term, short-sighted financial gain, rather than maximum acceleration of prosperity and security.
