The italians, Germans, and French want us to continue to subsidize their defense and to spend dollars in their countries. We have done this for over half a century by maintaining our bases and soldiers there and providing them with a nuclear umbrella through the cold war. these people are takers -they will never give. the only ones we can trust are the brits, israel, and australia. we'll finally learn that lesson from this episode.

I do believe that the German's will help the US and fulfill their NATO duties. Even the Green Party , which is as anti-militaristic as you can imagine supports the US. However, keep in mind that there won't be much enthusiasm in any European country about raging a "war" with diffuse goals and an invisible target. The European's will be cautious until Bush comes up with clear mission statement about what his goals are and what he wants to do. The "war" against terrorism is not a war in the classical sense and lines like "no distinction between terrorists and countries that harbor them" do not help at all. The goal of any retaliation must be to eliminate terrorists not thousands of civilists. (I am German and live in the US)
