To solve the hijacking problem, go talk to a few Israeli airliners. Why invent a new wheel when others have already solved the problem?

They've been under terrorist threat for years and you don't hear about their planes diving on Sharon's office.

Every cockpit is sealed with 2 steel doors for starters. Sky marshalls, etc...

PCSTEL:

I seem to remember a Stephen King novel where the pilot was able to put everybody to sleep by adjusting the cabin pressure.

>>Allow NO CARRY ON BAGGAGE... PERIOD..<<

And travel naked. Because that too would be required. Knives that are in carry on could be taped to the torso.

By banning carry on, do you ban infants also? Or do you want to sit next to baby that needs changing for 5 hours. Will women give up their Purses? I'm sure there are many other items that make this an unrealistic approach. You're no carry on is a bit too simplistic.

I'm not so sure the solution is this simple. For example, what is the correct concentration of sleep gas for an 80 lb child? Or a 260 lb man? Would the concentration for the man prove to be harmful to a child? Or a senior citizen? Or my girlfriend who has a lot of allergies? I have a friend who is a nurse and he tells me that the anesthesiologist in the operating room is really there to keep the drugs from killing the patient, not put them to sleep. Putting people to sleep is easy, not killing them is difficult.

I realize that I am stretching things just to prove a point. But, has anyone ever been on a plane where the oxygen masks dropped because there was a lot of turbulence? Or has the movie ever stopped playing for no good reason and the flight attendants had to re-start it? What if the gas system just started spitting out gas for no good reason?

I'm not sure that such an extreme solution will really work. I'm not sure that our society will accept a solution that has the potential to be so dangerous. Don't get me wrong, I do realize that a hijacking is really dangerous...

Also, the 'no carry on' thing worries me. My mom has to take a lot of medication. Can she carry her pills on? Does she have to leave them with the flight attendant? How safe is that if there are dozens of people giving their prescription drugs to the guy who works for the airline because he likes the free flights? When does the right to the pursuit of happiness (I like to carry my checkers game onboard the flight and play the person sitting next to me) get overridden by safety concerns?

I think the real final solution will be one that causes us all a little more inconvenience but allows us to keep more of our freedoms. Remember, if we live in a free society there will be NOTHING we can do to guarantee our safety. NOTHING. I like the fact that it is illegal for our military to operate against citizens of the country...

What will probably happen is that we will all have to go to the airport a little bit earlier for our flights. We won't be allowed to check in from the curb. Those metal detectors will get turned up so that they go off because of my fillings, and I will get a little personal treatment from a security guy. Airlines will probably have to cut back on the number of flights that they have. Some of the marginal airlines might even go bankrupt and we will all have fewer choices. And the possibility will always exist that a hijacker will still get on board. Or they will just mess with the breaks or landing gear. Or someone could just place a bomb on a subway. Or...

More then anything, I just pray that not too many innocent people die, in the US or anywhere else, in the next few months.

Chris
