heinz,

Do you have any thoughts on inflation or deflation after this mess is over? I am thinking of the future of 30 year treasuries.

TIA

Joan

Welcome back. Since you haven't been posting, I haven't been peeking much lately - except for last week.

Imagine this scenario. The planes hit WTC. The buildings haven't collapsed. The loss of life was minimal. They sent a bunch of structural engineers who originally designed the buildings to evaluate the building safety. They comeback and say "the integrity of these structures is intact. After some minor structural and major cosmetic repairs, it is safe to return and resume your normal activities." Then, in a few weeks, a minor hurricane hits the NY coast during the day. Both towers, loaded with people, collapse! Wouldn't you blame the structural engineers for doing what they did?

The US financial markets, which is already burdened with heavy consumer debt, sagging stock prices, soaring layoffs, weakening confidence... you name it, was structurally weak as of 8:30 AM on the day of the attack. Then it took another devastating blow. The engineers of this financial structure are all telling us that everything is safe and sound and return to the buildings. As far as I am concerned, I can not trust their judgment - afterall, these are the same bozos who told us so many lies. They paniced when they weren't supposed to (LTCM, Y2K). Now also, while at the same time they are showing their panic in their actions, they are telling us not to panic.

They may mean good and I REALLY HOPE THAT THEY ARE RIGHT!!! What if they are wrong? The last of Tom, Dick and Harry put their last penny in the market. Then what?

In the event of a structural failure due to poor design or bad engineering judgment, you can revoke the PE licenses of the engineers, sue them, jail them.. whatever..

What will you do to the architects of unsubstantiated optimism?
