I think from this post, you are struggling with the underlying cause from a humanistic point of view, while I'm struggling with what to do with people captured who are likely a threat to society but have broken no law.

I say this knowing little to nothing about law or humanistic points of view.

I'm assuming that we will be quite likely to capture alive a number of 'potential' terrorists. And struggling to develop a viable framework to manage these individuals, in a way that doesn't promote Orwells 1984 two decades late.

As for well forumalated or not- I don't think that's required if we are to develop a mutual understanding through brainstorming and discourse.

CB, the idea that these people fight us because our culture is different is wrong, IMO. They fight us because of Israel primarily and because of Iraq secondarily. Ariel Sharon's rise in Israel must have particularly enraged them. Bush's disengagement from the ME at the same time added fuel to the terrorist fires.

Don't forget that Sharon was the general that led Israel's army into Lebanon. That invasion cost well over 10,000 civilian deaths out of a population of a few million (think WTC multiplied by 50 in relative terms). Almost 2,000 of those deaths were an outright slaughter mostly of old men, women and children at a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, perpetrated by Christian Lebanese militias, under the noses of the Israelis and, the Lebanese say, with the acquiescence of Sharon, who controlled militarily the area.
