An alternative to accomplish this goal, would be to support and fund the rebels in the north.

But they too, may be an unsavory lot at best, no better, at least some are not.

An ugly choice that may need to be made. I doubt that congress would fund it. Depends on how events unfold.

"Removing the Taliban will probably require U.S. troops on the ground." True, but the U.S. could set up a provisional afghanie government with the million odd people who are in refugee camps surrounding the country and then fight the Taliban together with those displaced people. With the aim to ultimately create a democratic government, and throw in a little land reform for good measure.

I am not sure you are at odds with the president or me, if this is a solution. I don't know if we are in a position financially to do this, but if we could it might work. What do we do about the countries like Iraq, Syria, etc. Do we concquer them too.
