Our military has traditionally drawn a line in the sand where the enemy is. . . and simply bombed their location. However, this enemy is under the sand. . . literally. And as we learned in Vietnam, once the enemy goes underground, they become quite deadly. Our bombs have difficulty finding them. . . which requires us to commit large number of troops. Foot patrols can root out the enemy. But not without large loss of life. In the Gulf War, we learned where chemical plants were that were involved in biological weapons testing. We surgically placed bombs right down their chimneys. But this new enemy has no chimney. In many cases they have no front door. . . or back door. . . but rather a disguised trap door or cave entrance. They look like the citizens of the countries they occupy. The challenge will be to find a way to keep safe while rooting out the enemy. Furthermore, we must first identify the enemy. Today Secretary of State, Colin Powell, gave out a phone number to call if you can help to translate intercepted messages. You might be working for the FBI, CIA, military or any number of government agencies. He says an extensive background check will be done and the candidate only needs to have lived in America for 3 of the last 5 years. I hope these background checks are really thorough. With the dozens of Arabic dialects, just organizing this effort will be monumental. So how do we find them? In my opinion, we need extensive intelligence. We must calculate their NEXT move. . . not just track their last move. We need to staff an office of forward, out-of-box "extrapolators". . . who can fill in the missing blanks and project moves ahead of time. Our military has plenty of order givers. . . and plenty of order takers. But creative thinkers who can place themselves into the minds of the enemy as they are fed intelligence about the enemy . . . . THAT, in my opinion, is what will make the most headway in this war.
