i would say that the majority of individual investors has been led down this path by the WS "experts"...your losses aren't real, since you must hold forever anyway, and stocks "always" come back. well, some stocks never do, and at times, the expected comeback can take a lot longer than anyone thinks. i could point out the 25 years it took for stocks to come back after the '29 debacle, but since i'm well-known for outgrimming the best of them, i'd rather point out the 64 years it took after the collapse of the South Sea Bubble in 1722.
in both instances the typical boomer wouldn't have had the patience to see if they REALLY would come back, always.
