Dear JPR:

Iran is certainly one country that qualifies. Its educated and skilled middle class has held the radical fundamentalists in check somewhat.

With patience and help, possibly Syria, could also become more moderate ( I am not saying this will be easy)

Closer to your home, Pakistan, is an example of what could go wrong if we blindly and indiscriminately lash out at the Taliban.

News reports in Today's Wall Street Journal suggest that the leaders of Pakistani Government faces huge domestic unrest in the case of US attacks on Afghanistan in general. They also suggest the Pakistan Army may not defend the government to put down domestic unrest that appears to be defending Islam.

And then where does that leave India if Moslem Fundamentalists gain control of Pakistan? No need for me to detail to you how that could play out.

I agree with you about about certain states in the Gulf area turning a blind eye--and of course I will agree that Iraq, or at least its government is a special case.

Nevertheless, I still maintain we must proceed cautiously and with reason here--lest any short term military/police actions alienate people of an entire Faith toward anything Western.

Bill

Check Point Charley : Ma'm, aren't you forgetting your global ID - JPR

Would you rather live to tell your Check-Point-Charley hassle, or die and reveal your postmortem DNA identification?
Nowadays we all carry many cards on us, mostly in the nature of credit cards, SS cards etc. It is in the future that every citizen, immigrant or non-immigrant will carry an ID on him with data and info such as eye scan, facial scans, DNA genomic data.

When these new technologies are used on a large scale, the cost of these procedures will be acceptable for all wanting-to-live people. A swipe of the card will have to match the person carrying it. As to who will pay for it is dependent on the person carrying the ID. It could range from self-pay to the employers.

Strict laws should be in the books that the genomic data are not misused and that the data should be encrypted in such ways that the examining official does not have a clue as to the genomic make-up of the individual, but has only a matching code confirming the authenticity of the person carrying the card containing the data. This genomic match is applicable only in extreme cases where the easily reproducible methods fail to confirm a positive identification. But the data for the eye scan and the face scan should be reproducible at the check Point Charley. Welcome to the new age.

For Export Only
The leaders of the countries around the world are coming to US to discuss global terrorism. Some have only a perfunctory interest because "the goods and services" of the terrorist cells in those countries are marked for "Export only". Those indigenous terrorist cells sell their "goods and services" in western countries and other countries such as India. The cells are well documented, studied and catalogued by the host nations, but that info though useful to US is never given at all. "What the heck, my ass is not on line" is the attitude. These attacks were devised and carried out by hundreds of people. And no Govt. on this earth knew about. That is a lot of baloney. The conspiracy of silence is the cause of this disaster.
