Unarmed

One thing in the future will likely be true. Banning knives on flights will make the passengers more unarmed and therefore more helpless. At this point they do not know whether the terrorists merely walked on board with the weapons they had or were aided by others.

A knife is valuable for safety in the event of accidents and the necessity to sever restraints and many pilots carry them. Obviously the issue of who could carry a gun onboard would have to be mitigated by many factors.

The general usefulness of an armed populace against terrorists is unknown but cannot simply be diswmissed without any study. The federal government must recognize some efficacy as they authorize 47 different agencies to carry arms including FEMA and the EPA.

"What difference could it (right to bear arms) possible(y) make in such a case?"

As they have been saying, terrorism can happen any where, at any time and use any method. Whether it is preventing another incident (not all will be on airplanes) or helping apprehend someone on the run, an armed, honest populace can help. We are one of the only countries that has this, and it was put there for a reason. My post was mostly to hilight the argument many anti 2nd Amendmenters use that "it can't happen here".

This event tragically showed that it can.

An obvious answer is that if a few passengers on that plane had guns WTC would likely not have happened. Not advocating this but just a response to your question.
