I am pretty sure that all commercial pilots carry them. A friend of mine who is a United co-pilot. I remember when he got his job he showed me what they need to carry in their flight case. One mandatory item was a Leatherman, which is a knife, needlenose pliers and an assortment of tools.

I think the only study we need is to look at Israel, which has a heavily armed populace. Having a gun doesn't do you much could when someone sits down in a pizza shop and suddenly blows himself to bits.
