WASHINGTON : The Afghan rebel commander and Northern Alliance chief, Ahmed Shah Masood, who was injured
seriously in an attack on Sunday, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Monday.
According to an American official, Masood was attacked by two Arab suicide-bombers, who had come to meet Masood in guise of journalists. The official said, Masood’s death has weakened the Northern Alliance and now there is a danger of serious conflict between a number of rebel commanders who would try to take Masood’s position. The Northern Alliance warriors have suffered a great set back, however, the present situation is termed as a good omen for Taliban. Russian news agency, ITAR-TASS has also confirmed the Masood’s death.
According to reports, Masood was injured when a bomb exploded while he was giving an interview to two Arab journalists in a highly protected place outside his house in Khawaja Bahauddin. During the interview special security arrangements were made. It is said that bomb was fitted in the cameras of Arab journalists that exploded during the interview. Both the Arabs and a personal aide of Masood, Asim Suhail were also killed in this explosion.
Reports said that Rabbani government’s ambassador to India, Masood Khalili and an official of so-called foreign ministry of Northern Alliance were also killed. It was learnt that Khalili had gone to Khwaja Bahauddin to seek special instructions of
Masood for certain sensitive positions.
The agency said that a leg of Masood was blown in the explosion, while he also sustained serious injuries in the head, face, chest and arms that proved fatal.
Masood was transported in critical condition to a hospital in Dushanbe in the meantime the agency released the report that Masood was killed, however, a spokesman for Northern Alliance contradicted the report saying that Masood was injured and under treatment in the hospital and his condition was stable. Later, early morning on Monday at about 1.00 am, various news agencies including Interfax, AP, Reuters, AFP, CNN, and ABCNews, quoting a senior US official said that the Northern Alliance warrior commander succumbed to his injuries.
Masood was known as a diehard ally of India, Russia, Europe, America and many other Western countries. He served the
purpose of its supporter countries and continued his activities against Taliban. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Northern Alliance,
Bismillah Khan has held Taliban responsible for Masood’s killing. He claimed that the Arab journalists held Belgian passports and they got visas from London before coming to NA-controlled area. However, the Foreign Minister of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Maulvi Wakeel Ahmed Mutawakkil, while talking to AFP, termed the allegation as baseless and said that it was true that Masood was Taliban’s enemy but Taliban were not involved in his killing. He said, had Taliban planned for such attack on Masood, they would have informed before carrying out their mission.
