KB, RE: <<when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, our blood lust ran extremely high and I'm sure we wanted to capture and disembowel each and every Japanese pilot and sailor, from admiral to swabee. That was the emotion. But what we needed to do, by whatever means we could, was defeat the enemy, achieve their unconditional surrender, and revitalize the Japanese people, who had also been a victim of their government. >>

Truer words was never spoke!!

I think the part that says it best is the part about revitalizing the Japanese people. The only way to "win" the war totally and completely, is through education and income. Ignorance and poverty are our enemies. When people attain a higher level of income and education their birth rate typically goes down and they tend to attain what we may refer to as a state of "relativism." There will be zealots among them but the population generally will be more accepting of differing views and less extreme in their hates. That's why I think that free trade and the internet are the two most important forces for freedom and peace in the world today.

As an aside, does religion create hatred or just give it an overtone of rightousness and amplify it? Is there some other alternative that I'm missing? It's not a rhetorical question and I'm certainly not attacking the beliefs of many in a supreme being. I'm just wondering how that works. Ed
