We aim at military targets and near by civilians (sometimes force there by the military as a "human shield") may be hit. The WTC attack was aiming at civilians. Its not like the Pentagon attack (an attack against a military facility with a lot of civilians in it, still evil but an attack against a military target) or our attacks on Germany and Japan's industries (which were building weapons used to fight us in an on going full scale war, but they were in or near population centers and they were attacked with massive inaccurate force resulting in the killings of many civilians).

Tim, I don't agree. I think those planes were aimed at the WTC for both symbolic and practical reasons. The practical had to do with NYC's status as the financial capital of the world. Its an important US industry, employing hundreds of thousands of people throughout the US. The destruction of those buildings was not unlike bombing German factories.
And I don't think anyone doubts that we have been hurt by this attack. There were a lot of key, senior financial people lost in the WTC attack. It will take years to replace that talent.

The symbolic aspect of the attack has to do with the bldgs. themselves. They were considered the heart of NY's financial district as well as the heart of the industry. Destroying them went a long way in hurting the image of NYC and the US as the financial capital of the world.

And it also sends the message that we, the US, are unable to protect are most import public and private symbols of power. Why do you think the world is so outraged? Why do you think France is being cooperative... you don't think that they wouldn't love to f*ck with us for the millionth time? Because behind the outrage is fear. If the terrorists can do this to the US, then what can they do to them....the other countries of the world?

The terrorists pulled off one of the most horrific crimes of this century with almost perfect execution. But I think they underestimated or misjudged its impact. I think they there were going for massive fear; what they got was fear and outrage, and they didn't count on the outrage being bigger than the fear.
