>We left Saddam Hussein in power in hopes that his own military and his own people would bring him down and replace him with someone saner and more moderate. That was an implicit part of our strategy.

We left Saddam in power for these reasons:

-Without him the Iranians will be having a BBQ in downtown Bagdad not too long after he went down, not good for our oil
-We needed a bad guy to justify our bases in Saudi Arabia to protect our oil
-We needed cooperation of the Middle East fat cat rulers to allow our bases there because "hey, if you make us leave, evil Saddam will attack again and this time we won't help you". It works marvelous.
-We needed an excuse and arena to have our pilots get some real action training in bombing (mostly). Besides, who knows how long Viejas can last?<g>

In other words, we like Saddam in power, as long as he is there, we are there protecting our oil. All the rest is BS food for the public.

>No government is ever going to keep its hands clean.

I agree. but we seem to have made some people very pissed off over there for a very long time, so pissed off that they could actually plan and execute their plan last week. I say we better stop pissing them off for a start as we embark on the "war against terrorism" (get to the oil fields in the Caspian Sea)<g>
