Sure we do, we will just run a deficit to do it. It is very much like the banking crisis we had 15 years ago, if they collapse, then we are in worse shape than we would be if we bail them out. OTOH, it also very well may result in them being regulated, if not nationalized. We just don't have the rail system to replace the airlines, and even if we did, it would be of dubious economics. The US isn't Europe, we are way too spread out to subsist on rail. There is a need to be able to go from one coast to another and return in the same day. Until we get good quality, universal, high bandwidth connections, we are stuck with airliners. Period.

I think you may want to go back and read what I wrote. I can understand bailing out the airlines...its just the talk of other industries like insurance and hotels with which I have a problem.

Do you think these other industries should be bailed out as well?

As a follow up to an old discussion, I was just listening to the show Hardball. The guy on that show was interviewing H.Meyers who was second in command at the CIA under Reagan.

He swears that the CIA reported to Reagan as early as 1983 that the then Soviet Union was crumbling. What the hell was Reagan spending all those billions on defense in the mid and late 80's.....especially on the Starwars program? Damn, its galling...all that $$$ wasted just to placate someone's paranoia.
