Guidant gets FDA OK for new artery device

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Medical device maker Guidant Corp. on Monday said it received U.S. regulatory approval for an instrument that uses radiation to treat an artery that has become clogged after previously being propped open by a stent.

A stent is a mesh tube that is implanted by surgeons to hold open clogged arteries. Guidant said that in 20 percent of patients who receive a stent, the arteries become blocked again, a condition called in-stent restenosis.

Guidant's Galileo Intravascular Radiotherapy System treats the condition with radiation. The device involves a catheter, radioactive wire, and a unit that calculates the amount of radiation to be applied.
