We should have a perspective on the violence inflicted by both sides in the second world war. All sides seem to want to forget some aspects of it. Whether this guy wants to say that it wasn't Hitler who started the war (as UK and France made the declaration of war, even though it was Hitler who invaded Poland - sorry "liberated"), or those on the Allied side who forget the mass bombing of cities. I would think that most people of my age (mid-30s) or older who are well educated won't forget it especially in the UK. Younger people might not be aware of what really happened. I would think Americans were aware of the nuclear bombing in Japan even if they don't know about some of the raids on Tokyo.

Aside from the kidding around, I think the key thing about this guy was we started talking about the current situation (I was trying to read the newspaper) but very fast he went to tell me how the Jews were the real cunning enemy of the West. When I said "if there had been Turks in Germany in Hitler's time he would have picked on them instead" he would hear nothing of it. Muslims are bad in his view but only a little above Aborigines and Gypsies. So I don't see some line drawn around the Muslims as the threat to the West. Yeah, that's just one guy, but I would submit many, many have similar but more moderate views throughout Europe.

An interesting diary was published recently that was written by this Jewish professor who lived the entire war in Germany. He was married to a Christian German and maybe converted himself (can't remember) and so wasn't rounded up and deported. He survived the bombing of Dresden which is where he was from.
