I agree that an invasion in the sense of capturing and holding the entire country is not practicable (as Genghis Khan, the Brits, and the Soviets learned), but neither is it necessary. What may be possible, and effective, is the temporary capture and defense of an airport from which to launch search and destroy missions in the surrounding mountains. Kandahar would be an good base for this, since it is fairly accessible from Pakistan and has a good airport (which we built in the 70s). What we would have to avoid is another Khe Sanh, by only using the base when we could provide defense, and evacuate at other times, such as during the winter months.
