I don't generally disagree with you. I'm not in favor of buying security with a police state. The thing is, if we want to maintain liberty, we have to be alert enough to know when it's being used against us by an entire secret platoon of organized foreign assassins on our soil over a multi-year period.

This event was not comparable in scope to JFK, MLK (neither of which I'm even sure was ever really resolved) or McVeigh, evidently a random looney who worked with maybe one or two other guys. It's difficult to stop solitary nuts, you have to get lucky. But in this last event, there were dozens of people involved, and the breaking news is saying the plan may have been to take over even more planes with more squads of hijackers.

I don't want omnipresent federal surveillance, nobody does. But I don't want to feel like our enemies are omnipresent on our streets either. This operation was *far* too big to tolerate. We won't be any more free if we live in constant fear for our children than if we insist on federal awareness and infiltration of large groups of foreign enemies on our shores. At some point, you have to draw a line, and spend some money, and maybe even give something up.
