"The Ulema (council of clerics) wants the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to encourage Osama to leave Afghanistan, but of his own free will," the Taliban's Bakhtar news agency reported.

Even if the Saudi multimillionaire leaves the Central Asian nation on his own volition, it's not clear where he would go or whether that would be enough to avert U.S. retaliation.

Reuters reported Thursday that the Taliban opposition in Afghanistan, the Northern Alliance, is urging a quick attack on the Taliban and would like to coordinate with the U.S.

The news agency quoted Soleh Muhammad Registani, a military official of the alliance, the U.N.-reconized government in Afghanistan, as saying, "The Taliban are so concerned about a U.S. attack. It's a good opportunity for us to attack."

He added, "We have to coordinate our attack with the United States. We don't have official contact with the United States, but we hope we will have contact with them. I think this will be possible, and we're waiting for some contact from their side."

Add to your analysis concerns over further attacks on domestic targets this Saturday (9/22). Whether or not the fears are well founded, few are willing to carry risk over this weekend.
