Ben, however, that is only the case BECAUSE they are illegal. a heroin addict can live to a ripe age, if he gets the stuff in its pure form. many doctors in Vienna used to be morphinists around the turn of the century, without society suffering any discernible ill effects. the problem the addicts have is that the drugs are not pure, and extremely expensive, all because they are illegal. the addict HAS to have the stuff, so he takes desperate measures to get the money, and THAT is what wrecks families, breeds ancillary crime, etc.
we have old medical records in Europe that prove that the same percentage of the population was addicted to opiates BEFORE and AFTER they became illegal. so making them illegal has NOT reduced the population of addicts...it has only made outcasts and criminals out of them.
the above assessment can be proven by the experiment that runs in Switzerland for the past four years: there, hopeless long term heroin addicts are actually given pure heroin under medical supervision for the price of a beer per shot. 98% of the addicts thus treated have been reintegrated fully into society as productive members. so all that claptrap that is used to justify the 'war on drugs' is just that.

We need a license to drive, over 18-21 to drink, why not to have a license to live and reproduce (half kidding). What is the root root (not a typo) causes of all these problems? Methinks, it is lack of reasoning, lack of understanding one's own deepest emotion, and lack of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If most of the people can learn all these while they are growing up, and the needs are reasonably satisfied, I would think most of the problems would not happen in the first place. BWDIK.
