a snippet from G-S' Nightly Research Report on Akamai Technologies, Inc.:

Last week, Akamai and Compaq announced a broad strategic alliance under which Compaq will resell Akamai's EdgeSuite service through its Global Services division and Akamai will deploy Compaq servers throughout its network. Compaq will also license Akamai's EdgeScape content-targeting capabilities to enable it to better track web user information. We continue to be impressed with the high-quality partners and resellers Akamai has been able to attract, and note that Compaq joins the ranks of other leading companies such as BEA, IBM, Digix/Worldcom, KPNQest, Oracle, and XO Communications in supporting or reselling EdgeSuite.

COMPAQ OFFERS LARGE TEAM OF INTEGRATORS. As one of the five largest systems integrators, Compaq employs over 20,000 consultants and is the largest integrator of Oracle systems. We expect Compaq to establish a dedicated Akamai practice within their consulting group and to resell Akamai services bundled with Oracle software, Compaq hardware, and consulting. Akamai management has indicated that Compaq has a detailed plan to scale their Akamai operations, adding a predetermined number of Akamai-focused sales reps each quarter and holding them to Akamai-specific quotas. In addition, the location of Compaq Global Services in Stow, MA, (close to Akamai's headquarters in Cambridge) should facilitate the partnership.

WE BELIEVE EDGESUITE WILL PROVE SUCCESSFUL OVER TIME. The growing support of several leading companies and our extensive channel checks continue to lead us to believe that EdgeSuite offers a very meaningful value proposition for customers with extensive web applications and large audiences or traffic spikes. We believe that, over time, the majority of high-quality web sites will leverage the ESI protocol that underlies EdgeSuite or some similar architecture. The key risks to Akamai remain customer churn, the lengthy and complex sales cycle involved in EdgeSuite, and the overall slowdown in technology spending. Akamai continues to face the challenge of driving EdgeSuite traction, but we believe this effort will prove successful over the long term.
