Well, maybe and maybe not. Content changes, depth of believe in great segments of the world's populations, appears fairly constant. Depth of belief generates (imo) a variety of content- always has always will. (imo) Some will be like that espoused by OBL, some will be like that espoused by the Dalai Lama- most of it will be somewhere in the middle.

What if you believe you have the Master Religion and believe that anyone who believes otherwise is going to Hell anyway (and is therefore unworthy of God's love)? Many mainstream denominations believe that the ultimate role of the individual is Service to God. Who's God and what does this God see as good?

The issue is not depth of belief, but content.

I don't think you can dismiss the relevance of depth of belief. It's the depth that causes the sense of stratification from and intolerance of the "other." That intolerance may not manifest itself in violence, but it still ain't pretty.
