That wasn't the context of the remote fly story I thought I read. Or maybe I just dreamed it!

I thought the story specified a dead or wounded pilot -- in the context of a military plane.

On the subject of spy drones -- the first time I saw something like that was in the late 60s when they were flying a RC Piper out of Princeton Forrestal campus(Home of the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator and also the Project Matterhorn) by wire.
