Toil and Trouble

Stocks at this hour are back in the red after a deep falloff and a sharp rise in early trading. A variety of factors are contributing to the volatility, but the main issue seems to be the emotion-driven market and fears about what the future holds for the economy and for the world. As word of more layoffs and missed earnings land on Wall Street, traders have seen little reason to buy as the assessment of the damage from last week's attack continues. Traders took little comfort from remarks by President Bush in his address to the nation last night, and indeed, fears of a long, costly war may now be greater than ever. Analysts say that all bets are off, and there's no telling where the bottom might be. Add to that the volatility of today's triple witching expiration, and there's no telling where the indexes will end up at the close.
