In the mid 1980's a union organizing group approached some of the disgruntled employees of a small manufacturing company, about 50 million in sales nationally. The union organizers encouraged the employees to file various trumped up charges relating to safety and labor practices at the company. Management reacted by holding informational meetings with the employees to show them that they were and would continue to be better off as a group without the union. One member of middle management was particularly popular with the rank and file employees. This person was responsible for administering first aid and had on ocassion used his own vehicle to "ambulance" injured employees to the local hospital when they had been injured by some of the plant's heavy machinery. Many of the employees were foreign and this manager had helped with arranging language lessons and other forms of assistance available to such people (on his own time). Needless to say, this manager took a stong stand against unionization and his opinion was respected by many of the employees. That's when his car started to be vandalized on a regular basis, his life was threatened. A suspicious fire started in his office. Threatening phone calls were made to his young wife who became terrified. Union goons showed up at his home and tried to intimdate him into quitting his job intimating it would be best for his health. His phone would ring at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. When answered, deep breathing was the only response. There were many other tactics of intimdaiton and fear. The company's lawyer told the manager it was the dirtiest unionization campaign he had seen in over 20 years. In the end the union lost the election. But the trouble did not end there......
