>European news commentators are on the lookout for the President's next surprising comment. They still haven't got over his ignorance at the time of the Pakistani PM's name.<

I think you may find that some, if not most, European publics are runnning farther in support of the US than are their leaderships or "European news commentators." Much commentary can be traced to an "intellectual snobbery/elite" that thrives on poking a finger in the eye of the US, virtually whatever the issue.

Example: If you listen to the BBC, you will find that it has nightly devoted an extraordinary amount of valuable news and feature time to the rash of discrimination against Moslims living the US. It topped itself last night with a long piece--equalling or longer than it gave to the President's speech--devoted to what it termed the "myth of America as a multi-cultural society."

Face it: It's tough being No. 1.
