And that's how creating democratic societies work.. It takes time and often you take 2 steps back for every 3 steps forward. Democratic values are learned, not inherited. Tolerance for one another, and respect for both the rule of law, and each other's personal rights can take generations to nurture.>>>>>>>>>>>

Nice rant, and may I add that after we are through with our show of force, we go about doing for the Middle East what we did for Japan and Europe after WWll. We prop up their economies with great infusions of American dollars.

We make sure that the people have access to the latest technologies available. We make sure that the fiber optic and telecommunications industries get the opportunity to install and implement the systems that will eventually hook these people up to computers, cell phones and PDAs, so that they are propelled into the 21st century ASAP.

That is if we can still afford it.

Best

>It's a cruel world out there and few of these power mongers have any interest in promoting democracy or the concept of inalienable rights.

Sure...as long as we support them in suppressing their own people despite of our values crap (democracy, freedom, human rights, etc.)

>And the reason people hate us is because we're not willing to promote their particular special interest over the interests of their political and economic competitors.

I respectfully disagree. The leaders we support in the Middle East because we keep them in power while the people are raped. And the people hate us because they don't like being raped, if they protest they might lose their head, you know.

>For every person around the world who "hates" us, I'm sure you can find one who "loves" us because we have
enhanced their economic or political livelihood...

Maybe but not in the Middle East and the Muslim countries where the ratio is probably a million to one (well, in that range, you get my point)!

>IMO, the only gauge of whether people love or hate the US, is contained in the numbers of individuals who
risk their very lives to emigrate here to make a new life for themselves.

This has nothing to do with love or hate, it has everything to do with economics. People everywhere want to live a better life and create something for their children. The ones who make it here are lucky because they escape the poverty and hopelesness in their native countries. The ones who don't fall victims to extreme fundamentalist lunatics and a few of them end up as suicide bombers:(

>And that's how creating democratic societies work..

Sure. But we are not sure helping the situation around the world, on the contrary!

>We're criticized for not getting involved in the bloodbath that resulted from Milosevic's nationalistic jingoism in
Yugoslavia, preferring to let Europe handle their own "backyard", but then we're condemned when the scenes from CNN force us to intervene and protect Kosovars from Serbian pogroms.

I am sorry Hawkmoon but the above statements shows to me how little you know about what went down in Kosovo. FYI, we supported the Croatians ethnically cleanse Krajina of its Serb residents and KLA thugs to take over and ethnic cleanse Kosovo from pretty much all Serbs and we are now supporting them in carving out a part of Macedonia. Ask any Serb and Macedonian about what they think of our foreign policy against them, sit back and listen ,and think about what you heard. Read some of my posts in the Kosovo thread.

Only 69 posts to read, not bad.
