Frankly, the Communists are looking pretty tame compared to OBL and his gang of terrorists. Look at the price the world has paid to defeat Communism........the loss of millions of lives at the hands of the totalitarian leaders we supported and built up.

I think we should rethink our assessment of the Cold War......it really isn't over cause we are still fighting for the victory. The Soviet Union is no longer in existence but we were out foxed by a few groups of clever
dictators and bedouins that we supported and trained. They turned the tide to bite us in the butt. Nothing has changed except our false illusions.

I've reordered your post to similar topics...

You seem to be trying to blame terrorism entirely on the West. Is it the West that tells these "martyrs" that "holy war" is sanctioned by the Koran and they will get 70 virgins in Paradise?......

Are you claiming the US arms industry CAUSES terrorism?

You're doing that binary thing on me again. Of course not. What I'm saying is if you find a country that has been in the throws of war for a long period of time you should expect that a person of evil will rise to power. That person must have a cause to survive and maintain power. If they defeat the original opponent, they have to find a new opponent. That's what you should expect to happen, fair not fair; righteous or not, it will happen, that's the reality.

One can negotiate [generally] with a nation state or you have a rationale hope of doing so; you cannot negotiate with colonies of roaches. You can try to take a sledge hammer and kill the roaches one by one; you'll lose. You have to focus on eliminating the environment in which they breed.

"If US arms production were to be shut down today, you don't think the Chinese or Russians or Europeans would, within six months, have taken up slack? Or sooner?

You know this problem has a history as long as man: Genghis Khan, the Huns, the Visigoths, the Vandals, the Vikings, ...... The list goes goes on and on. It didn't just suddenly start in 1776. Or 1917.....

And if, say, Iran and Iraq could not have gotten weapons from the West, do you honestly believe they would not have fought and slaughtered each other anyway? Wars and massacres didn't start with the M-1 tank....

Again: I thought the Afghanis wanted very much too throw out their atheistic Soviet oppressors. Would it have been better to leave the Communists in possession of Afghanistan?

I think there's some reality in that that you don't want to deal with

Maybe there is a third choice. Work towards ending the violence without propogating the violence.

I think there is more than one reality here.

There is the reality that the major countries have sponsored war throughout the third world. And there is the reality that out of those wars, persons of evil will rise to power and become terrorists.

If the first is unchangeable than the second is inevitable.

So the choice is to change the unchangeable or expect the inevitable. I expect that technology will advance or expand so that it is conceivable that terrorists can get their hands on weapons of mass destruction within my lifetime. So I'm highly motivated to change the unchangeable.

I find that preferable to accepting the inevitable. I think too many accept the unchangeable and ignore the inevitable. Do I think changing the unchangeable is easy or can be done overnight? Absolutely not. To accomplish it, will be a monumental evolutionary achievement for mankind of biblical proportions. Which means, it'll be damn hard.
