And there's a legal limit to the snow here...
in Camelot!

I read a fantastic book this summer, everybody on this thread should order from amazon:
HUMANITY by Jonathan Glover

All about war in this century (or rather, last century). Sorry, but people are the same everywhere, and throughout time. One interesting sentence: "When mass murder is suficiently reinterpeted, people can support it with an unimpaired sense of moral identity." I think this is true in all societies. Seeing one's own as mythically good, and the enemy's as demonically bad, is the beginning of such reinterpretation.

>We didn't invent the oppression in these various nations...

Of course we didn't. But we sure have helped it and we still are doing it!

>We've responded, often belatedly, to massacres such as occurred in Ruwanda

LOL

>the local economy INEVITABLY benefits far more than would have been the case had we not been present.

Hello? The only ones who benefit are the oppressive rulers and their cronies, not the People!

>Overall, you'll be hard put to provide an example where a US presence has been detrimental over the long-term to a nation's growth and political liberalization.

You GOT to be kidding!

As far as what you said about the Balkans, IMHO, you have no idea what you are talking about!

I could expand on the Balkans but I am barely keeping up with this thread and bigbrother Faultline may intervene again to keep us focused<g>

Going out tonight (remember the good ol' days when I was young and single<g>.), oh the joys of business travel<g>

Nothing personal okay

Cheers

I wanted to compliment you on a thoughtful response to what I am sure was a ridiculous assertion. George made my ignore list on Sept.12 over on the thread started by T Lo. It has been a little discouraging reading some of the posters who believe the U.S. is responsible for every injustice in the world (all our sins and then some).
There allegedly is an old Chinese custom whereby if you save a drowning mans' life you are forevermore responsible for that man. Or, as my brother is fond of saying, "no good deed goes unpunished". There is a perverse wisdom there somewhere.
